My glass headlight has a lovely little hole and blowout chip in it that is new. Any advice on how to repair it?
The temporary solution would be to tape over the hole with some 3m clear, but looking for more long term. I can look for the lens but they are about $175 each.
Anyone have any luck with repairs techniques or shops?

You can have a windshield shop fill the crack to prevent it from spreading. But that is really about it.

what about those windshield chip repair kits, would that work?

Im not worried about it spreading, its the type that I suspect wont really spread, its water ingress.

Thought about that, but the hole goes all the way through, so this kit would just ooze the shmoo into the lens cavity.

I wonder if one of those windshield chip repair kits would work on a headlight...

They would, but the hole prevents me from using them since there is nothing to stop the fluid on the backside.

I’ve made these kind of chips last by s i l i c o n i n g o v e r t he hole on a hot day, any moisture in there is going to look like garbage and rust a n y metal bits.

Thought about silicon. Thankfully dry is something Utah does well so getting the moisture out wont be a problem.

Is there anyway to apply tape from the backside via the lamp hole or remove the lens from the assembly?
Or tape the front and apply the goo from inside maybe via a straw

I vote for a dab of clear RTV. It's not the most elegant, but it's effective.

Take the light out, split the glass from the reflector using a knife and heat, fix glass, glue it all back together?

The filling would handle that.

I think I’ll stop by the glassery today and see what they say. Also fun it looks like my inner axle seal is leaking on one side. yay.

Just spend the $175, or try to find a cheaper one on ebay or what have you. It sucks, but the old girl deserves it. Also, it’ll probably bug you if you ghetto-fab it.
Also also, you probably need all the help you can get in the “projecting light” department, so anything that might hinder output should probably be avoided. Not that a dab of translucent silicone is going to make a night and day difference or anything, but still...

I’d say the windshield chip stuff but I don’t know how temperature resistant that is. Lights can get a bit hot.

especially these ones since the lows stay on with the highs.

Had the same thing happen to one of my Hellas. I got them for $20, so I’m just going to go with the silicone and tape method.

get with one of the guys that do glass repairs for used car dealers. Most used car dealers have a guy, the better the dealer the better the tech (usually) so I’d try that route...try a high volume store like Honda/Chevy and a few smaller/higher end stores like Porsche/MB/BMW etc. Depending on the size of where you live multiple inquiries will generally result in the same name.

IF you remove the lens from the housing , put tape on the outside. Put the tape side down, put the filler on the inside of the glass top. it will self level an d cure. remove tape.

My cheapass fix would be just clear marine silicone
And if I couldn't get to the inside of the lens to patch it, I would put a drop to plug the hole, then would use the windshield repair kits

Unfortunately the blowout is on the backside so the smaller hole is on the outside. Otherwise I love your plan

Seems like a cheap enough solution if you can’t split the assembly open and fix it that way.
